The John Michael Kohler Arts Center (JMKAC) is a nationally acclaimed visual and performing arts center located in the heart of downtown Sheboygan, Wisconsin. While other museums focus on objects, JMKAC and its recently opened Art Preserve focus on relationships with artists and the community, and on preserving and exhibiting artist-built environments. Founded in 1967, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s presents works by diverse artists, from the vernacular to classically trained and from local to global perspectives. JMKAC establishes a community locally and nationally with its rotating, original contemporary art exhibitions, live performances and events, classes, workshops and an on-site preschool.

 The John Michael Kohler Arts Center is in search for a part-time Security Services Officer I. 

The Security Services Officer I provides institutional security for the art as well as educates visitors about security protocols, exhibitions and programs.  Considerable independent judgment and action are exercised within established guidelines. This includes monitoring the galleries to prevent loss or damage due to theft, vandalism, fire, etc.  The Security Services Officer I will observe and report any suspicious individuals or activities and provide visitors and staff with building evacuation assistance as necessary.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Monitor artwork in galleries ensuring established security and safety guidelines.
  2. Learn department procedures and practices. 
  3. Respond to real time security alarms and critical incidents. 
  4. Explain Arts Center rules and guidelines to visitors.
  5. Enforce security protocols, emergency procedures, and institutional regulations regarding the proper use and evacuation of the facility to visitors and third-party groups.
  6. Report fires, acts of vandalism, theft, illegal entry, and any other unauthorized or irregular activity to a supervisor and prepare routine security incident reports as required.
  7. Assist with Arts Center’s open/close procedures.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 
  • High school graduate or GED
  • 0-6 months of customer service experience
  • Prior security experience preferred.
  • Previous art art/museum experience, preferred.
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
  • Obtain First Aid, CPR, AED, and ALICE certifications.

The position is office/art gallery based and noise level usually moderate May occasionally work inside or outside at events where noise level could be moderate to loud.  

Hours of work can include daytime hours between Tuesday – Friday and either Saturday or Sunday to meet staffing and/or event needs.  

The position works at various locations depending on the schedule. This position must be able to commute between locations if needed.
